Our Story
Late 1800s
The general store opens as the commercial center and heart of South Strafford village. Howard Gilkey runs it for 47 years.
1977
Phil and Melvin Coburn purchase the store. The Coburns, including Melvin's wife Sue and their daughter Chrissie run the store for over 40 years. It stays a fixture of daily life and a beloved gathering place for the whole town.
2023
The Coburn family announce their retirement. Neighbors, old-timers, and newcomers rally together — raising the funds to purchase the building and form the Strafford Community Trust.
2025
Adam Smith and family became the new managers of the store to usher into the next era — still affordable, still for everyone, and still proud to offer Vermont-made products.
1943
The Varney family purchases the store and runs it for 35 years.
1973
Richard Wilson and George Tidman run the store as "Strafford General Store" before it is sold to the Coburn brothers.
"I can't imagine Strafford without Coburn's store. I've shopped in our town store for almost a century, and I hope it will serve the town for another hundred years."
